Smart cities

Marieta Del Rivero

Movilidad, 3. Seguridad, 4. Salud, 5. Sostenibilidad, 6. Turismo.

The Cities Standards Institute, a joint initiative of the British Standards Institution (BSI) and the Future Cities Catapult, brings together cities and key industry leaders and innovators to work together in identifying the challenges facing cities, providing solutions to common problems and defining the future of smart city standards. Smart-city technologies help cities get more out of their assets, whether they have extensive legacy systems or are building from scratch. There is no getting around the need to invest in physical assets and maintenance, but smart technologies can add new capabilities as core components are upgraded.

Box 1: Smart cities definitions. Broad definitions. The UK Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) considers smart cities a process rather than a static outcome, in which increased citizen engagement, hard infrastructure, social capital and digital technologies make cities more liveable, resilient and better able to respond to challenges. 2

Many larger municipalities have embraced the 'smart city' concept in recent years, but definitions of the term -- and examples of the ways technology is being used to make cities 'smart' -- run the gamut.
